Veronica paled considerably when
Cordelia mentioned acorn mead. Leaning on the
countertop, she noticed a small thermos off to the side
with a note attached from Grizz: Nica, if you are
feeling bad this morning, drink this coffee brew. It
will perk you right up. She gratefully did just
that.

Word of a birthday came to Speedy,
Grassie, and Dr. Warrell en route to Grizz's
store. "Thietris' birthday?" they call said together,
looking at one another. They then ran back to his
office, just in time to see Cordelia bring out a cake.
Speedy, Grassie, and Dr. Warrellall began to
sing: "Happy birthday to you Happy birthday to
you Happy birthday to Thietris Happy birthday to
youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!!"
Studying gives you
knowledge. Knowledge is power. Power corrupts. I am
learning how to be corrupt.
Up on the surface, at an unnamed
location, Grizz sat at his computer downloading emails.
He hoped that the coffee he had left for Veronica would
be just what she needed this morning. He grinned a
little, remembering her night at the A&C. The
A&C could be quite educational.
He hoped the
Prof. would have a great birthday, and was sorry he
would miss the party he was sure Cordelia would arrange
for him. But, duty is duty, and it just couldn't be
helped.
He noticed that one of the emails was
from the friend on a research jaunt to Australia. The
guy had some hare-brained idea of turning the cleft into
a posh desert resort. It would be interesting to see
what would happen when his friend tried to find the
owners of the property.
He read the email, and
looked at the picture attached. He sat for a time
thinking, then he printed the email and the picture, put
them into an envelope, and tucked them into a pocket.
This he would have to investigate personally. It was a
rather fascinating theory. It could really open up some
interesting lines of research if he could find what he
was looking for, especially with the picture his friend
had sent him for further proof.
He shut
everything down, locked the door, and headed back to the
cleft. Using his Relto book he linked out. Back on his
Relto, he opened the Eder Kemo book, touched the Journey
page, and
disappeared.

Professor T is in good mood, and very
pleased with all the cards and good wishes he's been
receiving. In honour of the occasion, he's made a
significant and permanent change to his office. He's
wedged the door open.

Professor T has placed the beautiful
lamp from Elkae in pride of place on his desk. How could
he ever doubted that she was the real Elkae? Imposter?
Preposterous!

FM left a small note on the Professor's
desk, along with another pile of notes from the Palace
Rotunda. The note read:
Happy bday
Professor T!! I'll give you some more work done by
people in this Institution as a present (because there
won't be much work done for the rest of the
year). I'll get the research proposal on the Algae on
your desk by the end of the weekend..

nodding and smiling. After thinking it over a bit, sits
down at her laptop*
RW, Thanks so much for the
letter, I really apprieciate your help. Concerning your
theory on the stalactites,I think you may be right on
target. My main problem is the City seems to be built On
the Stalagmites and so at first glance the island
appeared older (although I still think they're more
ancient than has been described to us)than the city
iself, and that can't be the case. When one of us goes
to the city, we should ask Frontmullet if he can find a
relative timeframe from when the city was built to when
the island was built. that perhaps would help us with
your theory that the stalactites are an example of
faulty writing.
As for the water, we're exactly
on the same page!! my note to the professor was just
some initial observations and I didn't want to get too
in depth. Your suggestin of acid was exacly as I
thought, and I just knew it couldn't be carbonic acid, I
was however thinking HCL (hydrocloric acid) instead, but
not having tested it, I wasn't sure. Also the water must
have a low oxygen contentowning to the iron in the water
has not oxidized much. I read somewhere that the algae
in the lake is bioluminescent, and I think that should
be looked at also. Thanks again, and stop by any
time!--Boatingirl
P.S. I think Elkae just got
herself a free facial peel!!!
After singing and having some cake,
Speedy, Grassie, and Dr. Warrell headed back towards
Grizz's shop, hoping to find the lanterns, evidence
bags, and film that they are looking
for...

Veronica was visibly shaken when Speedy
and company entered the DISCO (D'ni Internal Supply Co.
). She had no way of
knowing that this Speedy was not the
Speedy she had met the previous evening. She tried to
sound stern, but it came out rather pathetically, "What
do you want?"

Cordelia returned to her office and sat
at her keyboard. Her fingers glided over the keys with
speed and grace.
When she had finished typing she
hit the enter key and went outside to the Institution
Imager. The message glowed on the
screen.
Announcement Today is
Professor T's birthday and in his honour I will be
holding a party today. Everyone is invited, please all
bring a bottle or two of your favourite tipple.
Sandwiches and cake will be supplied and there will be
fireworks.
Admiring her work she stepped away
from the imager and skipped all the way back to her
office (which was most uncharacteristic for Cordelia)

Slacker watches as Elkae tucks a stack of pages and
photos into a manila mailer. She licks the seal, bends
down the metal fastener and lays it carefully on the
bookshelf to the right of the armoire. She reaches for
the satellite phone, makes a brief call and then
reclines on the bed. A few minutes later a FedEx man
comes in, waves hello, retrieves the envelope and links
out.

Cordelia delivers a large manila
envelope to Thietris. "This just arrived from FedEx,
Professor."
"Thank you, Cordelia." Professor T
takes the envelope and retreats to his office to have a
look.
Dear Thietris, Enclosed are some
photos I took which you may want to have a look at. I
believe I found a link between the D'ni and the Native
American peoples, particularly the Hopi
tribe.
As you study this composite, a definite
pattern becomes apparent. The kachinas and artifacts are
arranged in order of their age, the most recent on the
left. See how the more primitive object evolves into the
more modern object? I found the more recent Koyemsi
kachina inside the Burro Cave.
This street sign in Ae'gura seems to me to be
an even more primitive form of the Koyemsi
design.
Do you recall this glyph in Eder Kemo? It
seems to be a more modern version of the basic design.
What can this mean? I'm afraid I can't think straight at
the moment. Perhaps some of the other researchers may
have ideas.
One last thing. Bizzy sent me
this next photo which was taken by one of his security
cameras in Eder Kemo. I don't know if he's told you yet,
but Kemo is Bizzy's home. That's where I first met him.
If I remember correctly, he said that someone must be
"called" and touch the Linkin Log. This explains
so much. I wish I had the strength to explain, but I'm
sure you can figure it all out for
yourself.
Thietris, I do hope this research is of some
value to you. I fear it will be my last project. Please
do me a small favor: give everyone at the Institution my
regards and best wishes and see that Polly is returned
home to Eder Kemo where she'll be safe, happy and among
friends. I can't bear the thought of her wandering the
Institution alone. It's been a great pleasure to work
with you. Take care of yourself, old
friend.
Love, Elkae

Slacker looks down at Elkae and sees she's fallen asleep
again. He didn't think she felt well.
The woman in green links in and jogs
over to Thietris' office. Seeing the door open she
strides in and places the present she's carrying next to
his desk.
Present from Kestryll and Company!
I'm Vivian! Kestryll's taking a little R&R so you'll
probably see me running around taking care of things for
him. Okay!
Happy Birthday!
She spins
around and jogs out turning straight to the Eggroom. She
freshens things up in there then links
out.
Meanwhile Thietris opens his present and
finds two bottles of Teledahn Mushroom wine and four
packages of something described by a tag as Spore
Bread.
